Once he’s made it, he can get away with spouting all-knowing lines like “Don’t fear the end.” The tremolo effect on the bluesy guitar of “Don’t Know Where” is reflective of the path, shaky, but sturdy. On “Don’t Know Where”, he sings, “I don’t know where I’m going / I don’t know where I’ve been,” but the very fact that he’s going–gaining experiences along the way–gives him the wisdom he sings about on the title track. As much as Mason believes, “All the love that you see in the world / It came from money,” he’s a proponent of keeping on. “Found a piece of bad luck lying by the side of the road / I had a chance to put it in my pocket / But I’m wiser, now I’m getting old,” he declares on the closest thing he’s made to “Dry The Rain” since…well, “Dry The Rain”. Coupled with a line like, “This is the lie / This is your smile,” the former could seem disingenuous, but the music is the tipping point, and the song comes across as yielding to the audience. “We believe in life,” Mason sings on opener “America Is Your Boyfriend” over a combination of horns and cowbell that should make you want to roll your eyes but succeeds in making your heart race.

By juxtaposing his cynicism with anthems or buoyant sentiments, Mason makes the world to which he alludes, full of tower fires and greed, bearable. Mason has the ability to masquerade a scathing critique of capitalism as a marching band song, all while providing a mantra.
Even if not every track is a hit, each is massive, laden with stadium-level instrumentation and shout-along choruses that clearly emanate from someone who has lived life and gained knowledge along the way. With his live band and Smiths/Blur producer Stephen Street in tow, Steve Mason (formerly of The Beta Band) has created his biggest sounding record to date in About The Light.
